St. Gerard's School History

The following excerpt is referenced from "Catholic Education in Dufferin Peel - A Story Worth Telling."

As a response to growth in the Erindale Woodlands, S.S.S. #4, Township of Toronto (Erindale), was initiated in January of 1956, and St. Gerard opened in 1957.  The school was dedicated to St. Gerard, a name submitted by Eric Olsen, a long time resident of Erindale and a convert with great devotion to the saint.

Following an example set by neighbouring Boards, students were not charged for textbooks.  The Felician Sisters were a part of the teaching staff for many years, originally coming to St. Gerard in 1958.

Over the years, a number of additions were made to the school to accommodate the ever-increasing student population (1960,1963,1965,1969 and the latest addition in 2001).  Land was also purchased by the Board from the Public Board to accommodate the building of St. Martin's Church.

St. Gerard would become part of the Combined Board in 1962, the Mississauga Catholic Board in 1968, and finally the Dufferin-Peel Board in 1969.
